Foundation House recently made a submission to the inquiry by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works into proposed building works at one of the two immigration detention facilities in Melbourne, the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation in Broadmeadows, commonly referred to as the MITA.
The works are necessitated by the planned closure of the other facility, the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre (MIDC). The decision to close MIDC is not being reviewed.
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has prepared a plan for the works and this is being reviewed by a committee of the Commonwealth Parliament, as is routine.
Our submission can be accessed here. It expresses concern that the proposed works will adversely impact lower risk people in detention by reducing access to key health and recreational services and visits from external people.
