Refugee trauma conference, Sydney, March 2017 – read full text of address by Paris Aristotle AM
On the 29th of March the 1st Australia and New Zealand Refugee Trauma Recovery in Resettlement Conference was launched in Sydney. The “refugee trauma conference” explored the most innovative and successful ways to support refugees as they recover from trauma and resettle. The conference was staged by FASSTT, the Forum of Australian Services for Survivors of Torture and Trauma.
Almost 600 people attended the Conference, bringing together international experts, academia, senior not-for-profit leaders, health professionals, educators, community workers, volunteers and refugee community members for three days of innovation, inspiration and knowledge sharing.
The conference took a holistic view of trauma recovery and resettlement: articulating that refugees need support at both the individual and community levels to successfully overcome trauma. The conference covered the most pressing issues in the field, exploring challenges and solutions in the areas of trauma recovery, settlement, advances in trauma treatment, health, education, English acquisition, employment, community interventions and more.
International experts such as Victor Madrigal-Borloz (IRCT, Denmark), Suzanne Jabbour (Restart Centre, Lebanon), Dr Stuart Turner (Trauma Centre, London), Dr Alison Strang (Queen Margaret University, Scotland) and Susan Elliot (New Zealand). They were joined by some of Australia’s most well-known refugee specialists including Prof. Derrick Silove AM, Prof. Zachary Steel, Prof Richard Bryant and Dr Angela Nickerson, along with over 50 speakers from refugee support organisations across Australia, New Zealand and the world, many of whom are from refugee backgrounds themselves.
At the conference, Foundation House CEO Paris Aristotle AM gave a key note address entitled “The human displacement challenge – understanding and framing our response to refugees and asylum seekers.” Click here to read the full text of Paris’ speech.
