Celebrating with newly arrived refugees from Syria and Iraq
On Wednesday 4 October Foundation House was pleased to host the Hon. Christian Porter, Minster for Social Services and Senator the Hon. Zed Seselja, Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs for a very special community event. In September 2015 the Australian Government announced its commitment to resettle an additional 12,000 refugees from the conflicts in Syria and Iraq, this program is now complete and last week over 300 new arrivals from these conflict zones came to our Brunswick office for a garden party to celebrate.
The sun was shining and it was a brilliant day. In addition to speeches by both Ministers and Paris, community representative Rabi Roil spoke about his experience of surviving the war and settling in Australia. We shared a feast of Middle Eastern food and enjoyed traditional music. The children were entertained with face painting, Arabic storytelling and a magnificent magician. It was a wonderful day and a privilege to be part of.
