Launched in December 2011 by the Hon Ted Baillieu MLA, former Premier of Victoria, School’s In for Refugees; A whole-school approach to supporting students of refugee backgrounds (VFST 2011) is a resource that supports schools and school-based professionals in their efforts to provide a high quality education to young people of refugee backgrounds. This second edition has been produced in consultation with teachers and others in the community, health, family services and education sectors. It includes background information about understanding the refugee experience and the impact of trauma on learning, development and wellbeing. This resource also includes case studies, professional learning activities, templates and tools for teachers to use in their work, to assist planning and change processes in a school environment.
The professional learning activities (PLAs) are outlined in simple lesson plans and are designed for schools to support teachers and other school staff to engage with the material in the guide. They allow users of the guide to gain a deeper understanding of the issues and provide opportunities to apply concepts and strategies. Materials to support PLAs are found in the tools and resources sections. Most PLAs are designed to be used in conjunction with a case study.
These case studies have been provided to support the professional learning activities (PLAs). They are designed to support teachers and those working with schools to develop a deeper understanding of the refugee experience. When used as part of a PLA, the case studies are intended to assist with reflecting on existing practice and support areas identified for change.
