Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence 2014
Foundation House is very pleased to announce that Mrs Margaret Wehl, volunteer English Language Class Coordinator, has been awarded a Meritorious Service to the Community Award for her outstanding contribution to the multicultural communities of Victoria by the Victorian Multicultural Commission. We congratulate Margaret for this wonderful achievement and thank her for her outstanding contribution.
Foundation House has had many volunteers over the years but none as special, or as long serving, as our English Language Class Coordinator, Mrs Margaret Wehl. Margaret has worked at Foundation House in a voluntary capacity since 1993. She designed and delivers English language classes to refugees and asylum seekers who have a range of trauma related symptoms that challenge their capacity to access mainstream English classes. Pre-literacy in countries of origin, interrupted schooling in refugee camps and in transit, shattered lives as a result of persecution and trauma, ongoing psychological and physical trauma related symptoms, and the complexities inherent to resettlement all combine to make difficult the participants’ learning, recovery and healing. Aided by her very able team of volunteers, the learning experience that Margaret facilitates is based in an intentionally therapeutic environment. Participants learn to trust, to forge vital connection with others from émigré communities and to build relationships with volunteers of goodwill. Margaret’s contribution cannot be underestimated, she has successfully created a space for learning, healing and social inclusion and we thank her for her hard work and dedication.
