Message from the Chair, Lynne Haultain
Welcome to the final issue of HouseNotes for 2009.

This year has been an incredibly productive and satisfying one for Foundation House, with several government reforms and policies we have long advocated for coming to fruition.

You will find a summary of these policy developments in our 2008-2009 annual report. The report, which is now in print and available online (see news item regarding the annual report in this edition of HouseNotes), includes an update on a number of research projects we have been working on in the past 12 months, as well as full coverage of the specialised services we continue to offer.

We have just recently put to bed another very successful AGM and end of year celebration with Senator the Hon Chris Evans, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, proving to be a highly engaging keynote speaker.

Minister Evans acknowledged the importance of the programs and services that Foundation House and other NGOs provide for refugees and asylum seekers and re-affirmed that expediency of immigration status outcomes, an effective and humane approach, and the fulfilment of Australia’s obligations under international refugee law will remain the cornerstones of his Government’s policies. We were delighted that Minister Evans was able to attend our special event during a particularly busy time for his department and thank him also for his commitment to the many issues that confront our clients and their families as they attempt to rebuild their lives in Australia.

I hope you enjoy reading what we have all been up to since the July issue of HouseNotes and I look forward to another fruitful year with the Foundation.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and safe festive season.
