Committee Against Torture

A requirement of the international treaty, the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment is that State parties (those who formally agree to comply) submit regular reports to a monitoring body, the Committee Against Torture on how the rights are being implemented.

The body consists of 10 independent experts from various countries.

The Committee examines the reports, notes concerns and makes recommendations which are not binding.

The evidence considered by the Committee is provided both the governments concerned and others, i.e. ‘civil society’.

Australia is scheduled to have its compliance reviewed in November and Foundation House has provided a submission, please find here
